HIST 202 Issues in History

This course is designed to allow students to study the historical background to current social, economic, cultural, and political issues. The specific topic will be selected by the history faculty based on current events that are in the public consciousness. The thrust of this course is to offer students the historical basis for timely issues and events.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe how the issue arose over time.
  2. Explain how the issue related to the culture from which it emerged.
  3. Analyze the economic, political, and social aspects of the issue.
  4. Explain traditional and revisionist historical perspectives of the issue.
  5. Evaluate the issue studied in terms of continuing problems and opportunities.
  6. Compare the issue to other current events.
  7. Formulate specific, unified, and concise theses through writing that demonstrate an understanding of historical thinking.
  8. Apply introductory research skills that historians use to gather and interpret information.
  9. Employ historical concepts, methods, and/or theories to understand behavior, institutions, and/or change over time.
