MECH 225 Advanced PLC, VFD, and Controls

This course builds on students’ foundational knowledge of programmable logic controllers (PLC) functions and operations. Students will also explore the relationship between VFD’s and other control devices such as various switches, disconnects, and AI functions.

Prerequisite

ELEC 107 and MECH 110

Hours Weekly

2 hours lecture, 2 hours lab

Course Objectives

  1. Describe how PLCs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), and other control devices work together in an industrial system.
  2. Use a keypad to operate an AC variable frequency drive.
  3. Adjust basic VFD settings to control motor operation.
  4. Read and understand PLC programs that control two-wire and three-wire VFD operation.
  5. Create VFD programs that control motor speed, acceleration, deceleration, and braking.
