RLR 502 Teaching Comprehension and Content Area Reading
This course introduces theories and models of comprehension and explores their implications for teaching reading comprehension from grades 1 to 12. Emphasis is placed on understanding factors affecting the construction of meaning from print, including metacognition, language, background knowledge, vocabulary, motivation, and social and cultural factors. Text factors such as text structure and complexity are also considered. Students will examine teaching methods that promote strategic and critical reading of narrative and informational texts. Additionally, this course explores strategies and frameworks for content area and disciplinary literacy.
