SPN 101 is an introductory course in which students acquire foundational Spanish grammar and vocabulary in meaningful social contexts. Through multi-media the students are introduced to the geography and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking skills are developed through communicative activities and assignments. SPN 101/102 are taken as a comprehensive, consecutive sequence.

This class provides students with the opportunity to learn a full year of Spanish in six weeks with the advantage of intensive study, which promotes greater retention. Students will practice verb conjugations and usage, gain proficiency skills and learn key grammatical concepts.

Foundational grammar concepts are solidified and built upon by introducing advanced grammatical structures through multi-media content and communicative activities and assignments. Course will offer students an opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish language and strengthen their linguistic skills. Follows SPN 102 and will build on the concepts covered at the introductory level. This intensive class substitutes for SPN 201-202, thus making it possible to complete the language requirement in the B.A. core curriculum.

Intensive version of Advanced Spanish Composition and Conversation SPN 301-SPN 302. Designed as a bridge to upper-level Spanish courses on literature, history and culture. Its purpose is to develop advanced speaking and writing skills through extensive reading, a thorough review of grammar, and class and group discussions. An introduction to the literatures and cultures of Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Students will read a variety of works from different periods, regions, and genres, and discuss them in class in the context of the historical moment in which they were produced.

The course looks at contemporary Mexican Culture and society through the study of fictional works by Mexican authors. A variety of literary genres will be read, analyzed and discussed. Themes include: race, gender and ethnicity in the construction of identity; cultural variations among Mexicans; rural and urban views of the nation.

The goal of this course is for students to acquire a general understanding of Chile’s present day culture. To achieve this objective the course covers significant aspects of Chilean history, sociocultural traits, and current affairs that provide students with some of the fundamental facts and information that have shaped the country and its people. This class introduces students to Spain's medieval period, increasing their linguistic skills through readings, discussions, and writing assignments about key texts from this time. Focusing on how literature helped shape the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from Islamic rule, among other topics, the course complements SPN 485.

This course studies the literary production of Miguel de Cervantes, one of Spain’s most iconic writers of the Golden Age. In alternate offerings of the course, students will read either Cervantes’s great masterpiece, Don Quixote, or a selection of his lesser-known but equally important works in other genres, such as short fiction, plays, dramatic interludes, and the pastoral novel.

Literary and cultural readings from the nineteenth, twentieth, and twenty-first centuries illuminate stasis, change and conflict in Spanish society. Discussion of the texts will focus on the individual's struggle for rights against the reassertion of traditional social mores before 1975, and Spain's reinvention of itself after Franco.

This course offers training in oral interpretation between health care providers and patients, as well as sight translation of healthcare documents. This course examines the variable relationships between Christians, Jews, and Muslims in medieval Spain, when the proximity of these distinct cultures enriched each one in ways unheard of since. Analysis of primary and secondary literary and historical texts will address the coexistence and even flourishing of these cultures, as well as the tensions that eventually undermined their centuries-long collaboration.

This course studies the Jewish experience in Latin America from the colonial era to the present, a time and place where Jews have historically been marginalized or invisible. Readings, discussions, and student production will address the fluidity of Jewish identity, the importance of memory creating this identity, and the often antithetical relationship between Jews and non-Jews in Latin America.

Academic internships are available for qualified students (3.0 G.P.A.; 3.25 G.P.A. in Spanish). Internships provide Spanish majors with job experience pertinent to the study of Spanish. The internship may be taken for one to three credit hours, and the credit can apply to the Spanish major.
