SPN 301 Advanced Spanish Composition, Conversatrion and Culture I

Spanish 301 and 302 are bridge courses to all upper-division Spanish courses. They apply grammar and vocabulary patterns in order to develop advanced writing and conversation skills, while introducing basic tools for literary analysis.  Grammar review, reading, vocabulary building, and class discussion will lead to essays and presentations on relevant cultural topics. These courses may be taken in any order.

SPN 306 Advanced Spanish Grammar

Intense review of Spanish grammar which will benefit those who have a high proficiency in the language and need a thorough review of concepts in order to enhance writing, reading, oral, and speaking skills. Of special benefit to education majors who seek a Spanish endorsement and will be teaching the language at the elementary or secondary level.

SPN 307 Intensive Advanced Spanish Composition and Conversation

Intensive version of Advanced Spanish Composition and Conversation SPN 301-SPN 302. Designed as a bridge to upper-level Spanish courses on literature, history and culture. Its purpose is to develop advanced speaking and writing skills through extensive reading, a thorough review of grammar, and class and group discussions. Content includes different aspects of Costa Rican and other Central American countries and cultures.  Approval of Studies Abroad Director required.

SPN 315 Survey of Latin American Literature and Civilization

An introduction to the literatures and cultures of Latin America from pre-Columbian times to the present. Students will read a variety of works from different periods, regions, and genres, and discuss them in class in the context of the historical moment in which they were produced.

SPN 316 Literature and Culture of Contemporary Mexico

The course looks at contemporary Mexican Culture and society through the study of fictional works by Mexican authors. A variety of literary genres will be read, analyzed and discussed. Themes include: race, gender and ethnicity in the construction of identity; cultural variations among Mexicans; rural and urban views of the nation.

SPN 317 Chile, History and Culture

The goal of this course is for students to acquire a general understanding of Chile’s present day culture. To achieve this objective the course covers significant aspects of Chilean history, sociocultural traits, and current affairs that provide students with some of the fundamental facts and information that have shaped the country and its people. Offered in the IES-Santiago Summer Program.  Approval of Studies Abroad Director required.

SPN 320 Medieval Spanish Literature and Culture

This class introduces students to Spain's medieval period, increasing their linguistic skills through readings, discussions, and writing assignments about key texts from this time. Focusing on how literature helped shape the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula from Islamic rule, among other topics, the course complements SPN 485.

SPN 380 Latino Social and Health Issues

Course is designed for students in professional programs who need a thorough review of oral and written Spanish language skills in addition to specific terminology related to health and social issues: immigration, education, employment, workers compensation and domestic violence, and their influence in Latino health and medical services.
