vii. Procedures for Initial Non-voting Faculty Appointments

Initial nominations originate either from a faculty member, program director, department chair, dean, or the Office of the Provost. If a faculty member recommends the appointment, she/he shall write a letter of nomination to the dean, which includes the expected role of the non-voting faculty member. Once the dean receives the nomination from a faculty member, the dean will determine whether to forward a recommendation for appointment to the provost.

Nominations for non-voting faculty appointments originating from within the Office of the Provost will follow the program procedures if the potential applicant has a program affiliation. For example, a candidate being recommended by the Office of the Provost for appointment in the School of Nursing would be recommended to the dean of the School of Nursing for a determination.

The nominating dean shall arrange a discussion with the candidate to explain the process of application, the appropriate faculty rank, and the expectation for involvement with the MGH Institute. To request the assignment of rank, the academic unit leader will electronically submit the Non-Voting Faculty Appointment Form and the candidate’s CV to the Office of the Provost. The assignment of rank shall be in accordance with the Criteria and Interpretive Statements for rank. The length of the initial appointment will follow the guidelines for the approved rank.

If approved, the Office of the Provost will notify the academic unit leader of the appointment in writing. The Office of the Provost will also notify the non-voting faculty of an affirmative decision via formal letter.

For Type I: key academic leaders at the Institute, a non-voting faculty member being recommended at the rank of professor or associate professor the academic unit leader will submit an Application for Rank to recommend an initial assignment of rank along with the candidate’s CV. The Office of the Provost will forward the materials to the Faculty Senate’s Appointment and Promotion Committee. The committee is entitled to request additional documentation.

The committee shall review all documentation and by majority vote make a recommendation for rank in writing to the provost within two business days. This recommendation is to be accompanied by a supporting explanation from the committee. The provost will then review the recommendation and, if approved, recommend the appointment to the president and board of trustees at the next quarterly meeting.
