FA - Fine Arts

Students will engage with the visual arts through exploration, analysis and discussion, and by considering global influences, developments and intersections between the visual arts across cultures. Artistic disciplines to be covered include, but are not limited to painting, architecture, sculpture and photography. Students will learn how creativity and imagination expressed in visual arts shape ideas in historical and contemporary life. Fee: $60

Artistic disciplines to be covered include, but are not limited to music, theatre, dance and film. Students will learn how creativity and imagination expressed in performative arts shape ideas in historical and contemporary life. Fee: $70

A course designed to involve students in the creative process while concentrating on the fundamental concepts of design through a series of exercises using a variety of art media. May not be audited. Fee: $20

Western culture through the study of art forms from Roman-Hellenistic times to the Renaissance. (Salzburg only)

Studio supervision in basic design and painting techniques. Class is conducted by a series of seminar conferences and projects. Students are expected to provide all necessary materials. May not be audited. Fee: $20

Studio supervision in basic water color painting techniques. Class is conducted by a series of lectures, demonstrations, and student projects. Fee: $20

Introduction to both wheel and hand-building techniques using cone 6 clay. Glazing and firing procedures and the use of clay as both a functional and expressive medium will be demonstrated. May not be audited. Fee: $55

Studio training in the observation of objects. Basic drawing of inanimate objects in graphite and ink. Course also includes application of the principles of object drawing to sketching. May not be audited. Fee: $20

Introductory studio course examines historical and contemporary issues relevant to creating a personal visual vocabulary and communicating through sculptural forms. Classes will be structured around presentations, demonstrations, ongoing group discussions, critiques, and studio work in various media. May not be audited. Fee: $55

An exploration of the arts in Portland, including music, theatre, film, visual arts, and architecture. A majority of the class sessions are field trips to experience the arts in person. Fee: $120

Study of the aesthetics and techniques involved in the written dramatic form for video and film production. Emphasis upon writing, workshop critiques, and discussion of students’ screenplays.

A study of the Fine Arts and Artists as they have been perceived and explored through the lens of both Narrative and Documentary Film Makers. Students will study various means to crafting a personal response to various Director's approaches to portraying artists, many from minorities identities, in Film, as well as, crafting their own films about the Arts. Can be taken as an Exploration Core Course.

The study and practice of design concepts and skills needed for Visual Communication in our contemporary world. Emphasis will be placed on learning and practical application of both the fundamentals of visual design for print and digital media, and the use of standard digital tools and programs for creating visual communications in professional, public and personal settings.

An introduction to digital photography: basic digital camera operations, digital photographic techniques for adjusting and manipulating images in Adobe Photoshop, and fundamentals of digital image capture, output, and workflow management including scanning, printing, and preparing images for the Internet. Course consists of lectures, demonstrations, lab exercises, field trips, weekly shooting assignments, critiques, and a final project/portfolio. May not be audited. Fee: $40

The course introduces students to the conceptual and technical facets of the moving image. Class participants will learn about narrative cinema, explore documentary works, and view examples from contemporary video artists. Demonstrations will feature best practices in camera operation, sound recording, and simple lighting technique. Students will use Adobe Premiere Pro 6 to organize, edit, and publish projects. Helps the student to build his/her own unique language as an expressive tool for art making. The creation of 3-D objects will be made from a variety of materials such as wood, clay, found objects, and mache. Enhances skills in perception, balance, and composition. May not be audited. Fee: $55

This course is designed to lay a foundation for students in developing an aesthetic and conceptual framework for creating and analyzing artwork built of a variety of media within a single artistic composition. Students will be encouraged to experiment in ways that depart from what is considered as the traditional art of painting. May not be audited. Fee: $55

Advanced studio training in figure drawing and mixed media in graphite and ink. Course also includes application of the principles of object drawing and sketching to outdoor settings. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. May not be audited. Fee: $20

Advanced studio training in the techniques of drawing the human form, including the use of live models. May not be audited. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits. Fee: $55

This advanced studio class focuses entirely on stone carving. Skills and concepts learned in FA 244 will be strengthened while furthering a personal visual vocabulary using stone. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credit hours. May not be audited. Fee: $55

Introduction to the art of printmaking. A studio course in which students will make prints using a variety of techniques. May not be audited. May be repeatable for a maximum of 4 credits. Fee. $100

The History of visual culture through art, architecture and object design in its cultural context from ancient times to the early Renaissance. Topics include Paleolithic art and artifacts; the art, architecture, and objects of ancient Egypt, the Near East, Greece, and Rome; plus works and issues arising from the Christian tradition and its dialogue with the ancient world. Works will also be discussed in the context of the development of technology, politics and culture.

The History of visual culture through art, architecture and object design from the High Renaissance to Postmodernism. Emphasis is on individual artists, art movements, and significant works studied in the context of the development of technology, politics and culture.

Continuation of Digital Photography. May be repeated for a maximum of 4 credits. May not be audited. Fee: $40

An advanced level sculpture course where students will examine issues relevant to carving a three-dimensional form in wood. Students will create works that are based on concepts, and personal insights while obtaining technical skills with tools and materials.
