FRN - French

This introductory, fully immersive course teaches foundational grammar and vocabulary in meaningful contexts and introduces the geography and cultures of the diverse French-speaking world. Communicative activities and assignments build listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills. Authentic multimedia materials help students learn about and value cultural perspectives other than their own. FRN 101-102 are taken consecutively.

The second half of the year-long introductory, fully immersive course continues to build foundational grammar and vocabulary in meaningful contexts and introduce the geography and cultures of the diverse French-speaking world. Listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills are built through communicative activities and authentic materials. Students who complete this sequence learn about and value cultural perspectives other than their own.

Students increase listening, reading, writing, and speaking skills while advancing knowledge of vocabulary, geography, and cultures of the French-speaking world. Foundational grammar concepts are solidified through multimedia content, communicative activities, and projects. Students learn to identify components of other cultural perspectives and value other worldviews. FRN 201-202 are taken as a comprehensive, consecutive sequence.

As students complete the intermediate sequence, they solidify foundational grammar concepts and strengthen communicative skills in listening, reading, writing, and speaking. This immersion class engages students in the culture through work on projects and with authentic texts. By the end of the sequence, students will be able to identify components of other cultural perspectives and value other worldviews in comparison to their own.

This intensive course, which substitutes for FRN 201 and FRN 202, offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the French language and strengthen their linguistic and intercultural skills. FRN 202 follows FRN 102 and prepares students for FRN 301. By the end of this course, students will be able to identify components of other cultural perspectives and value worldviews other than their own.

This course offers students an advanced review and expansion of grammar, vocabulary and idioms to prepare them for the 400 level courses. A broad variety of activities is used to improve conversational proficiency, accuracy in written expression, and further develop intercultural skills. By the end of the 301-302 sequence, students will be able to recognize other cultural perspectives and use them in interactions in the target language.

Students further increase listening, writing, reading and speaking skills while advancing knowledge in the geography and cultures of the francophone world. Group discussions, compositions and presentations on cultural topics. Readings of selections from French culture and literature. By the end of the 301-302 sequence, students will be able to recognize other cultural perspectives and use them in interactions in the target language.

This course leads the student to an accurate pronunciation and intonation of French through carefully selected oral drills and listening exercises. It re-emphasizes the relation between French spelling and sound through phonetic transcriptions and dictations. French songs, radio broadcasts and news programs are used to improve oral comprehension. Taught in French.

This course offers a thorough review and refinement of the essentials of French Grammar in order to enhance writing, reading, and speaking skills. News items on French TV and reports on newspaper articles of the francophone world. Group discussions. Conducted in French.

This course offers the students extensive practice in speaking the French language. Emphasis is placed on the acquisition and use of new vocabulary and more complex idiomatic phrases. Taught in French.

Continued in-depth study of advanced grammar. Application of the new, more complicated structures in conversation. Viewing of French news programs to develop advanced oral comprehension and to familiarize the students with current events in the francophone world. Cultural readings, presentations and class and group discussions. Taught in French.

This course introduces the students to the important aspects of French history that have shaped the country and its people. Using a variety of cultural products (films, poetry, essays, newspaper articles, TV news), we explore the social, philosophical and political currents of France. Oral presentations, class discussions and papers on cultural subjects. Taught in French.

This course introduces students to France’s present-day culture and society. We study and discuss the main social and cultural issues in France from the 1960s to the present. Exploration and evaluation of current events in the French media. The material used comes from authentic French cultural texts, newspapers, radio and television programs, as well as from movies, advertising and songs. Oral presentations and a research paper. Taught in French.
