ARTS 110 Art Appreciation

Previously ARTT 103. The overall purpose of this course is to encourage an appreciation of Western Art. This is a highly visual course in which students will examine and discuss works of art from the prehistoric to the contemporary periods. Students will look at and analyze many images in order to gain an understanding of their form and content. Students will analyze the formal structure of various works of art as well as consider them in the context of the historical period and cultural framework in which they were produced.

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas to develop preliminary concepts as part of the creative process.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives to reinforce preliminary concepts.
  3. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes throughout the creative process.
  4. Apply information and ideas gathered through a creative process to other contexts.
  5. Understand the vocabulary of art and its application.
  6. Understand the elements and principles of design within art making.
  7. Recognize the material and process involved in the production of a work of art.
  8. Discuss art in a historical and cultural context, identifying the functionality of art and the artist.
  9. Apply learned concepts to the visual understanding of works of art in museums.
