ARTS 120 Introduction to Painting

Designed for non-visual art majors, this course is an introduction to the theories, practices, and techniques of painting with an emphasis on foundational painting concepts. Painting materials, techniques and practices of direct painting approaches called alla prima are introduced in acrylic. Working from direct observation, students are introduced to the formal visual principles emphasizing composition and color as elements of a stable pictorial space. Demonstrations, lectures and critiques support studio assignments and instruction in traditional and contemporary formats.

Course Objectives

  1. Identify and organize information and ideas to develop preliminary concepts as part of the creative process.
  2. Generate ideas, explore possibilities, and consider alternatives to reinforce preliminary concepts.
  3. Analyze and evaluate ideas or outcomes throughout the creative process.
  4. Apply information and ideas gathered through a creative process to other contexts.
  5. Define and apply the specialized vocabulary unique to painting.
  6. Study the art of painting from both historical and contemporary contexts.
  7. Explore a variety of materials and tools to produce paintings in direct method called alla prima.
  8. Develop technical proficiency working with specialized materials unique to painting to prepare substrates and various surfaces.
  9. Use elements of arts and principles of design to introduce composition in painting.
  10. Apply various color mixing techniques based on color theory in painting.
  11. Keep an active sketchbook.
  12. Present a portfolio of paintings demonstrating progression in craftsmanship and quality of the course objectives.
