EGR 211 Engineering Mechanics-Statics

Quantitative description of forces, moments, and couples acting upon engineering structures. The free-body diagram is used to understand the equilibrium of a whole physical system through isolation of each component particle or body.

3

Prerequisites

MTH 201 with C- or better, PHY 204

EGR 212 Engineering Mechanics-Dynamics

Dynamics mathematically describes the motions of bodies under the action of forces. The first part introduces kinematics which deals with the geometry of motion without considering applied forces. The second part, kinetics, relates the forces on bodies to the resulting motions.

3

Prerequisites

MTH 202, EGR 211 with a grade of C- or better.

EGR 214 Principles of Dynamics

Dynamics mathematically describes the motions of bodies under the action of forces. The first part introduces kinematics which deals with the geometry of motion without considering applied forces. The second part, kinetics, relates the forces on bodies to the resulting motions.  The topic of kinetics is introduced without an emphasis on impulse and momentum.

EGR 232 Applied Engineering: Automotive Design

This course will explore all facets of vehicle technology - from automobiles to airplanes, motorcycles to trucks with a focus on electric mobility. The course will begin with a look back in history while also studying current trends and future technology. The course will involve lecture, forum discussions, guest speakers, and tours with a goal to spark student interest in vehicle design. Course focused on the EV go-kart. Fee: $100

3

EGR 233 Applied Engineering: Automotive Fabrication

This course is primarily focused on automotive fabrication, design iteration, and testing. This course relies on input from projects proposed, planned, and designed in EGR 232. These projects are implemented and validated in this course on the EV go-kart. There is no prerequisite for this course. Fee: $150

3

EGR 234 Applied Engineering: Aircraft Design

This course introduces students to the world of aircraft design. Provides a brief overview of the history of aeronautical technologies and covers the basic concepts of lift, drag, thrust, weight, balance & stability, and performance. This course applies lecture concepts to the design of an unmanned aerial vehicle. Fee: $15

3

EGR 235 Applied Engineering: Aircraft Prototyping

Course introduces tools and techniques suitable for prototyping drones rapidly at low cost. Students will use CAD modeling, construction techniques such as laser-cut foam board, combined with open-source autopilots, to build and fly fixed-wing aircraft. Students learn aircraft design rules of thumb that will allow them to test, iterate, and improve their designs. Fee: $150

3

EGR 270 Materials Laboratory

Provides hands-on experience with the standard methods of processing and evaluating typical engineering materials. Includes experiments in tensile testing, heat treatment, microscopic examination, strain hardening, and impact testing. Fee: $75
